Natural anti-nausea, motion sickness fix

By Sari Huhtala

Heading out on a roadtrip with car-sickness-prone family members? Instead of knocking them out with diphenhydramine, try pineapple. What? I wish I would have known about this remedy 30 plus years ago when I took a chance and popped a Gravol™ and found myself incapacitated for the day while trying to chase a toddler around.

Pineapple contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme that can help calm the stomach and relieve nausea. Some studies have found drinking a glass of pineapple juice may help pregnant women ease morning sickness. Drink a glass of pineapple juice before heading out on a trip to ease symptoms of motion sickness. I recommend eating fresh pineapple or fresh pineapple juice versus canned or pasteurized pineapple to ensure enzymes haven’t been destroyed by the heat. On a side note, it’s the bromelain that causes the tingling sensation on the tongue as it breaks down the protein on the tissue of the mouth and tongue.
