Pumpkin Spice Latte

By Sari Huhtala

Craving pumpkin spiced lattes this season? You’ll love this homemade latte that doubles as a health elixir.

If you’re in the habit of grabbing a pumpkin spiced latte from Tim Hortons, your body is getting a blast of sugar – a whopping 38 grams of sugar in their latte. Since I’m always curious about ingredients, I googled their pumpkin spice latte. It listed only a handful of ingredients, but the one that really caught my eye was “pumpkin spice syrup.” This is questionable at best, since syrup can mean anything, and most times it doesn’t mean pure, unrefined, healthy syrup. There’s also the “whipped topping,” which undoubtedly is not pure, wholesome whipped cream.

At any rate, if healthier living is on your radar, then this latte might just hit the spot this season.

Pumpkin spice latte

  • 1 cup of nut or coconut milk (cashew milk is my favourite)
  • 2 tbsp fresh pumpkin puree (make your own pumpkin puree and freeze for later in little baggies)
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/8 tsp cardamom (optional)
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • Few dashes of black pepper to help your body absorb the turmeric

Heat the nut milk in a saucepan to make it hot, but not boiling. Pour milk into blender and add the rest of the ingredients. Blend well, then pour into a mug and enjoy!
