Happy Hormone Avocados

By Kathy Smart, RNC

After a long and dry winter our skin is often left thirsting for healthy fat to get rid of dry skin and dandruff, and to help reveal strong, shiny hair skin and nails.

Fortunately, avocados are loaded with heart healthy fat (called monounsaturated fat) and eating them is a great way to support glowing skin all year.

You can eat an avocado right out of its shell with a spoon, or you can get a little bit creative. Avocado toast is very hot right now, and it can even manifest in many different variations to suit whatever your tastes are.

The following recipe forms the basis of some of my favourite avocado toast variations. The combination of lime zest, sea salt and the creaminess of the avocado pureed with chickpeas and beets will make this your go-to fancy guacamole recipe… or is it hummus?

You decide!

Pink Lime and Sea Salt Avocado Beet Guac-us

  • 1 (15 oz) can chickpeas, well drained
  • 2 medium ripe avocados, cored and peeled
  • 3 tbsp each of olive oil, fresh lime juice and tahini
  • 1⁄2 tsp of lime zest (grate the peel of a lime using a cheese grater)
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 1⁄2 tsp each of sea salt, cumin, cayenne pepper and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 small pickled beet

Pulse chickpeas, avocados, olive oil, tahini, lime juice, lime zest, garlic, beet and all spices in a food processor until smooth.

Top 3 smartest ways to enjoy avo toast

Happy hormones avo toast

Your liver is your body’s biggest fat-burning organ. Make your liver happy and you will help reduce hot flashes, PMS and boost your metabolism. Why is this a happy liver toast? Beets are a known liver detoxifier and when eaten regularly will help to increase bowel movements and clean out the digestive tract, further supporting the liver’s detoxification efforts, helping to balance your hormones.

How? Layer beet guac-us, regular hummus and your favourite sprouts (I like alfalfa) and sprinkle with pink Himalayan salt.

Bust the blood sugar blues avo toast

Avocados are considered a low glycemic fruit due to their high healthy fat and low sugar content, making them one of the best foods to keep your blood sugar stable. This ensures that you have long lasting energy all day, and avoid becoming ‘hangry’ (a combination of being hungry and angry). Get happy and bust those blood sugar blues with this decadence!

How? Add beet guac-us to whole grain toast (choose a slice with a minimum of four grams of fibre); slice avocados and arrange in a heart shape and then add in more beet guac-us.

Let’s get busy avo toast

Sesame seeds are one of the world’s highest sources of zinc. Zinc is an important mineral necessary for the production of testosterone, which can help increase sex drive. Yes!

How? Add your favourite hummus or beet guac-us to toast; chop 2 tablespoons each of red pepper and red onion and add to toast. Sprinkle with one teaspoon of black sesame seeds.
