Power Hour Smoothie
By Dr. Joël, ND
Did you know that healthy fats are not only vital to reducing inflammation, but are also your body’s preferred source of fuel. In addition they help to balance hormones which are the foundations to healthy skin and hair, giving you your gorgeous glow.
Not long ago coconut oil was thought to be a “bad guy” due to its saturated fat content. We now know that coconut oil which is a medium chain fatty acid is actually a “good guy” with tons of health benefits, including promoting heart health, weight loss, thyroid function and immunity, thanks to lauric acid which is an antimicrobial.
You can enjoy coconut oil anytime you need a kick-start, including for pre-workout nutrition as it is sent directly to your liver to use as energy, making it a powerful source of instant fuel. Post-workout it is best to focus on carbs and protein for rebuilding glycogen (stored energy) and repair.
Coconut oil is also more heat-stable compared to other oils so it is the recommended choice when heating is required occasionally.
